Non vtec boost
« on: April 29, 2010, 09:41:33 am »
Alright guys, just thought i would post this up here for shits and giggles ;D
I just got my full time job back, so its time to start a motor build soon. Im doing what 95 percent of jacksonvi lle, refuses to do,and taking it to the next level ha..
Building a single cam, yea sounds fun...
Gonna run a d15b2 bottom end, and an a6 head, what? No vtec at all? un heard of haha. Vitara bottom end, with Fj distribut ors custom lenght i beams... Should be a fun little motor, prob gonna run bisimoto springs/retainers, un certain on what valves and cam i want to run..

Whatta you fellas think

Those rods will not work in a d15b2. d15 and d16 cranks are different, so no one makes rods for the d15s (except one company and they are $700). If you're talking about using the d15b rods, they are different from d15b2 and d15b7 also.

Save your money and find a d16,

Honestly for the price you spend on the FJ rods you can get a D16 short block. Then just do the shaved LS rods with Vitara's. Ive read the rods are good to 220ish hp, just get the ARP rod bolts. And if you want to debate that you want forged rods then why are you running $100 cast pistons. If you get forged rods, get real pistons. Otherwise, cast Vitaras with OEM LS rods.

With the D15 setup and Vitaras, youre looking at 6.5:1 compressi on. WAAAAY too low. The car will be an utter slug when you arent in boost and it will spool super slow. Even a complete A6 with Vitaras is low (IMHO) at about 7.2:1. A Z6 head brings it up to 7.5:1. (All numbers are with a Z6 HG)

This is the build I would do (I actually planned this out but changed my mind, lol)
*D16 block : doesnt matter which honestly
*D15 head : its the exact same casting as the A6 head just different cam which you wont use. You can generally get them cheaper since people dont know that piece of informati on.
*Vitara pistons with Hasting rings
*LS rods : There is a mod where you shave like .020" off each side of the large end of the rod so it fits in the crank and then a bushing for the small end so the D16 wrist pin slides in. Youll have like $120 invested in that.
*ACL or King rod and main bearings
*Z6 or Y8 metal headgaske t : this will up the compressi on a little over an A6 HG. Plus its metal which last a LOT longer, wespecial ly with boost.
*Supertech springs and retainers : We have used that brand on countless 500+ hp cars and NEVER an issue.
*Valves arent needed unless yours are messed up. They honeslty make the smallest differenc e in the world as far as hp. If anything, get a good valve job with the original ones and youre good.
*I never did the research on the cam, lol
*Skunk2 Intake manifold

Doug, its a bronze bushing. Any machine shop that has stock and is competent can make them.

thanks Jermaine.
J.....whe re im from competent and machine shop dont come in the same sentence.

lastly ive shook this idea around in my head in my pdn-a00 attempt(now defunct)

used LS rods +- $50.00 going rate
Machining     +- $75.00 quoted from the best machine shop locally.. ..this includes resizing the big end bore
Bushings      +-  $45.00 when they were available (these werent needed for my setup because the PDN-A00 99-01 CIVIC GX cng pistons use a 21mm pin)
ARP rod Bolts     $39.00

that puts you at $209 for some used oem rods

plus you are still 0.048 in the hole, which like you said puts you in the 7s for compressi on. but thats with 137mm rods.

the rods he mentioned fjt makes  (138mm) ups the compressi on almost a full point depending on your setup. I saw a couple sets on HT for $280 shipped. plus they come with ARP bolts and you dont have to worry about that pesky small end bushing.

 8) tickle my brain.   PS GSR/R rods are 138mm but theres that pin bushing again

I might know a shop but technical ly it is a shop that makes extruded Aluminum windows and they have a machine shop associate d with them.

I don't know if they do side work.

Also if your looking for bronze bushings there are plenty of places you can order bronze bushings from.
