Be your own radio station.
« on: August 17, 2010, 04:00:50 pm »
i'd like to start off by saying i'm not trying to sell these, i'm just sharing what i did, if someone would like more info to make one pm me, i have considere d making more and selling but thats not what this thread is about.
****************

so more then once i will be at a meet and there will be 3-4 guys all with there bass up, just thumping away. it looks bad, and adds to the "ricer" label. in our area on friday nights the local station has a dance party mix from like 10-12, thats great, we all tune in, and you have 3-4 cars bumping the same tunes, but on sunday there isn't anything. and its back to crazy 3 diff songs at the same time.

so i figured it cant be so hard to make a small, short distance radio station.

i turned to those fm modulator s, FCC says you can only have about 10 feet of range with these, they normally only work about 3 feet. after some fiddling i found a way to boost the signal. but it still didnt have a antenna. so i wired some adapters up, so i could plug and unplug the modulator . after about a week i had it working right. and this is how i have it wired.

audio side
green - standard 3.5mm to RCA adapter
purple - RCA female, 3.5mm, RCA male together
light blue - 3.5mm to fm  modulator

antenna side
blue - boosted antenna feed from modulator
pink - antenna male to female adapter with the antenna feed
gray - antenna mast wire, normally feed into the head unit

power
just uses 12v the modulator comes with a plug adapter for sig lighter, i just wired it to the plug under the dash, since i don't use the sig lighter anyways. the unit will power off if it is not getting audio (the model i used).

with the setup i have, it will reach upwards of 100feet, people tell me its gone farther, but starts to fad out.

if anyone wants a parts list, in better detail just let me know,

i have to get on my other computer to get the installed pic, but it all fits under the console : )

Great idea.

But one question, where did you find an fm transmitt er that has an antenna output? I have only seen ones that transmit from the unit itself.
I know it is the I.A. thing to do but you are better than that.

yep they are all setup like that,

when you open it up, and bypass the resistor that limits the distances it can broadcast, there is a wire for the antenna, it is a 4th wire that runs into the ground of the headphone s. so you just snip the 4th wire, and run that out of the modulator to the antenna.

the trick is you have to take the resistor out, or bypass it, cuz even with the antenna, with the resistor it only goes about 5 feet.

parts list

Belkin tunecast II

you need all the RCA ends, and then just the female 3.5mm

and you will need some spare wire. to run the antenna wire.

if you want a full plug and play, you can source the plug for the sig lighter too. and make a adapter for that too.

NOTE, when you wire your power. DO NOT GET THEM BACKWARDS . i ended up ordering a second tunecast2 ... ( why i said it took me a week to get right ) if its wired backwards, it will blow the tunecast up.

the moding of the tunecast is pretty easy.
once you open it up, you'll see there is a (ithink) blue wire? its the spare wire coming from the headphone s jack going to a separate part of the board. if you fallow the circuit first thing it hits... a pretty good sized resistor. unsoder that, and jump the gap with a piece of wire, or clipping of something . snip the spare wire, extend it... and bam, you now have a broadcast ing device.

make sure you stop by the FCC and pick up your license.

whats cool about this one.. it will auto turn off if there is no source. and once you set the station, every time it turns on, it will use that station. i picked 88.7 cuz in my area nothing is around that, so its a clean signal.

finished project.. ..

:)

Ok this is cool as hell.

Now the questions .

1. Could you just do a y split for the antenna instead of unpluggin g your headunit?

2. How much would a plug and play unit cost?

hey rich, the way i did mine is i used a antenna extender, and made a y out of it. just snipped it in half, and led the inner lead to the antenna wire. ive never had any side effects from running it this way. (feed back listing to a radio station)

as far as FULL plug and play, there are no honda's around here for me to source the male/female sig lighter plugs, im sure i could make some sort of jumper, or what not.

modulator was 20 (after shipping)
to make the adapters was 10-15 (after shipping)
i could put one together and ship for 50. (ithink)

but again i don't want anyone on this site to think i'm trying to sell these things. i came here sharing, if you want to buy one ill happily help. but i'm not trying to be that guy thats trying to make a buck on the street corner.

i also didn't think that many people would think its that cool. i've used mine about 4-5 times, and it takes longer to explain "what" it is, then we really get to use it.

i had other ideas like a wireless hotspot, with a redirect to my own website : ) so when i'm out at meets, people would have wifi but before they used it, it would be like YO, thank thatguy for your weeffee

Bad ass idea. I really like it. My friends used to always wanna use a fm trans and listen to one sond and roll out together, But as you all know the range was too short. THIS is a very innovativ e idea and i give thumbs up!
