Title: 91 Civic Si Track Build - B18C-R|EF9 SIR Converted
Post by: Presidential_Detailing on November 08, 2013, 10:37:26 pm
Thought I would take a few minutes to share my newest member of the family. After racing the BuyBrakes.com CRX (http://crxcommunity.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=55281&hilit=buybrakes) Time Attack Car, I fell in love with the classic EF chassis and wanted one for myself. I was going to find a shell and build up from scratch, but i came along a deal I couldnt pass up that had all the same parts I intended to purchase and MORE, for about half the cost as building from scratch. Sure, not as fun, but financial ly, it made way more sense to pick up this one. It will need a little work and some personal touches, but it has a ton of great parts in it already.

I flew from FL to IL to buy the car, drove the car 9 hours straight from Chicago to Knoxville, TN the first day. Unfortuna tely on the second day of my trip I decided to go through "The Dragon" and spun a rod bearing. I was able to limp it to Atlanta with a very mild rod knock, while one of my good friends made the 6 hour trip to pick me up and trailer the car home the rest of the way. More details on the motor soon..

Heres a video of my leisurely drive through Deals Gap aka Tail of The Dragon (Minutes Before Spinning A Rod Bearing)

After taking apart the bottom end to see what damage had been done, this is what I found. All journals seem to be in great shape still with very slight wear on the #4 journal which had the spun rod bearing. I still need to remove the engine from the car to pull the crank for further inspectio n.

Cylinder #1

Cylinder #2

Cylinder #3
(http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b238/TheTwanksta94/EF9%20Build/1991-EF9-034.jpg)

And finally, the dreaded #4.

All next to each other.

I also removed the girdle and the main bearings that come with it.

Decided to clean out the garage so I have room to work on the car, she needs a bath though! After I get the motor built, im going to have the bumpers and bumper fillers painted to match.

Got a little work done last night. Removed the head, and confirmed that I do have legit ITR cams. Looks to be a fresh head gasket and water pump. ARP head studs, still has perfect cross-hatching from a hone. Such a shame this motor didnt hold up, it was running so well and looks to be a very fresh rebuild. They just botched the rod bearings and ruined it all. Will hopefully get around to removing the block from the car so I can remove and inspect the crank and rods.

Got some more work done. The parts table keeps growing.

Finished taking the motor out of the car so I could start tearing it down.

Cross hatching still looks fresh. Such a shame I had to take this one apart, the compressi on was PERFECT.

Here is CYL #4 which is the cylinder that spun, doesnt look too bad! Dont mind the blue stuff, it fell from the shelf above when I was moving stuff around.

And CYL #1 for reference .

Decided to take a couple pics of the interior. .I need to learn how to take good interior photos, I cant get a nice one for the life of me! Probably just need to take them when the car is outside in natural light for the best results. Its a bit dirty, I havent touched the interior since I bought the car. Once the car is running again, Ill go through everythin g. Also plan on adding new black carpet and floor mats.

Plans for interior:
Momo Steering Wheel
Lower Optional Console
Black Carpet
Floormats

Brought the block over to a friend of mine at Apex Motorspor ts to have everythin g measured out before sending it off to the machine shop this week. Mains were a little oval'ed out so were going to do a minor align hone on it, along with a few other things.

Getting done this week:
Bore/Hone Cylinders
Align Hone Mains
Micropoli sh Crank

Good news, the crank is still well within spec. It actually was perfectly round. No major scouring or gouges, just a very small brownish colored streak about 1/4" long which will probably be removed with a micropoli sh.

Motor is back from the machine shop! Crank should be back this morning. The entire engine is being blueprint ed by a good friend of mine at Apex Motorspor ts, FL. Just need to order rings, bearings and ARP fasteners for him to start putting it back together. If anyone in the central FL area needs engine work done, give JD at Apex a call, he will take care of you and make sure its done right!

I planned to prep and paint the block, but after cleaning the block, I think i have decided I am just going to leave it bare aluminum. Not perfect, but certainly not bad. The car is being built more for function than to look pretty, so Im not stressing too much over it looking entirely perfect. Although I still like it to look nice! :D

Getting the car ready for ILDS WinterFes t this weekend. Decided to clean up the used carpet I bought a month or so ago to put it in for the show. Took everythin g out tonight, still need to vacuum the floor. Once the carpet dries out, Ill start putting in back in. Cant wait to see it done, should make the interior look and feel much nicer. Also going to put in my optional lower console at the same time!

Semi-finished. Still need to snap a shot of it completed . Ran out of time, didnt finish up the car until 2am.

Bolt Boys hardware came in for my header. I needed something with an allen head due to extremely tight clearance s of the RMF Narrow design. Well see how they work.

Had some free time this weekend, so I worked on the car for most of it. My battery was shot, even after jumping and driving around. If you turned the car off it would just be completel y dead. Had it tested and it was only reading 10v and only 100cca. Due to the wire tuck, etc, the battery is located under the dash, so I decided to get the same type of battery to make my life easier.

Old battery, swolen!

Also rolled the front fenders since the tires were rubbing on them pretty bad. Dropped the car an inch in the front as well. No rubbing and looks great!

Im a perfectio nist when it comes to stuff like this so prob longer than most. Id prob say 30 minutes per tire to degrease, clean, dry and paint each wheel with two coats. Im still not sure how well it will hold up, I havent really driven it yet besides around the block.

Most people just use a stencil and spray paint them, would be much quicker once you have a stencil made.

Good news, scheduled to get tuned this Sunday by JapDan in Tampa! Pretty excited to have it running its best, hopefully it makes decent power.

I will be aligning the car myself this weekend, so thats what the string is for. JapDan recommend ed these spark plugs, so I will bring them with me to the dyno this weekend.

Finally put in a couple hours under the car. A friend of mine gave me a brand new 22mm ST Rear Sway Bar, only problem was the way my exhaust was routed. I has a small crack starting to form in one spot making an annoying rattle, so I decided to just chop it off and go ahead with the sway bar install.

The back section I cut off.

Left it turned to the side so it wasnt blowing hot exhaust straight on the gas tank, I will eventuall y rerun the exhaust to the back or just leave it and put a slight turn down on it.. :D

Are they measuring DB at the events.

I know Black R got busted by breaking DB levels for his exhaust.

Not at this facility, and probably not at local events. If I went to a regional or national event, I would get hit with it though. I plan to fix the exhaust back up, just didnt have time and now Im going to wait until I get the ASR setup installed so I know where the exhaust will need to go.

Video from an auto-x I ran yesterday with the Florida Corvette Club. My best run of the day, I managed to pull off a 43.5 and took top spot out of the Hondas. There were 8 or 9 Honda/ Acuras out there with various setups. All B series though! Not sure where I stand overall with the Corvettes, but should be somewhere close to the top as well.

Just ordered the "race" bolt in roll bar from Autopower for the EF! Cant wait to get it and put seats/harnesses in the car!

Not in a EF, but it looks identical to this. I will be keeping full interior as well.

Would you be so kind as to weigh that rollbar before you install it?

I'm just curious how many lbs total it adds to the car.

Video from this weekends Auto-x. Missed first place in SMF by .508 in a pretty competiti ve smf field. Still was 5th fastest overall in Raw time and took 2nd in PAX. Overall, not a bad weekend!

Yeah, street tire class within SMF. We have a fairly large group of SMF Hondas in our region that are pretty competiti ve, we all basically agreed to run street tires to keep cost down and keep things even more competiti ve. We still usually take up much of the top 5-10 and take PAX pretty often. Its a lot of fun.

Some new toys came in! Major props to Brian over at PCI, he was great to deal with and the product is top notch.

Also make sure to check out 5X Racing Online Race Shop: Mazda Road Racing Specialis ts (http://5xracing.com/) for some of the best deals on racing products, ask for John(the owner) and let him know Billy with the EF sent you.

Love this hatch and the fact that you recently picked up a clean white DA.  Isn't John a cool dude (blue sedan)?

Thanks! I love the DA. John was an awesome guy, you could tell he was a true enthusias t and not just following a "trend".
