can we start a welding/fabrication section?
« on: May 03, 2012, 08:39:39 am »
for guys on the site like bam, cbe, bam, that like to fabricate all their own parts, i think we should have a discussio n section similar to the one on h/t.

I am starting this thread because i have a nightmare on my hands.

long story short, most likely due to the lack of an oil cooler, my original oil tee broke off in the block while trying to replace my ss feed line. while trying to extract the broken tee, the said area cracked.

thankfull y im currently a tig welding student and have full acess to a machine shop.

my question to you guys is the best way to go about repairing this. im out of options.

im thinking some weld-through filler. grinding it down a little for a good bite. and re-tapping the hole after i weld it. my concern is making sure the crack wont spread internall y. and what kind of gas and amperage settings i should be running.

Ugh, that's out of my league. If I were in your shoes I'd be looking for a new block.

ok speaking as somebody who does a little bit of welding and an Engineer.

I had this discussio n a while ago with one who I trust, Engineer/ car geek/ racer.

So I value his input.  I had asked him about a transmiss ion housing that an EF member had cracked right near the filler hole.

Well this was the best solution we could come up with since it had the following things.

1. Aluminum
2. penetrati on of oil

We figured out that if we cut into the cracked area (grind etc), then kept a wet towel in the area of welding and gradually laid a weld on it then it should be ok.  Remember Aluminum welds totally different than Steel, Different heat propertie s etc.

That is pretty much how we figured out how to do it in a nut shell.

yeah im a student for tig. i do mostly stainless but i can weld aluminum pretty well. i plan on taking the motor up to school this evening and getting some advice from my instructo r whos a 50 tig vet. i have another block i can use but i REALLY dont want to tear apart a perfectly good motor. its my dd so the less work i have to do the better.

bam im in north georgia. but im afraid its too late. even after having my welding instructo r properly patch it up, it still finds a way to leak. yes i use teflon!

im actually buddies with andy, the guy with the black rt wagon. i built my black car in his garage.

so heres the new plan. yank motors from both cars. put internals from red car into block of black car (new bearings). drop motor in red car. bam. done. the internals are in much better shape and more favorable (low comp pistons, new crank from honda etc)

breaking it in all day thursday and friday. then heading down to silver dollar raceway to see how she does.
