Rebuild NA, Rebuild then boost, or B sereis?
« on: February 19, 2011, 11:45:48 pm »
*Disclaimer* its midnight and I'm tired, if I dont make any sense, feel free to make fun of how i left things out and didnt think any of it through.

So the Dookie Civic's D16z6 is burning an ass ton of oil. Like 2 quarts per tank of gas. Obviously it needs some attention . I'm trying to get some input from people who have experienc e with this. Rebuild kits run around $300. Rings, pistons, bearings, valve seals, all that good stuff.  Keep in mind that this is the super cheap ass budget build. If I keep the Z6, it will be getting a SI trans.

The car is going to be a street drivable track car. nothing super crazy, but I love drag racing and I plan to autocross some this year, and I dont want to beat on my Integra.

I dont know what would be the "best bang for the buck". here is what I am thinking so far,

A: Rebuild Z6 for NA. Shaved head/block more, thin head gasket, DIY port/polish, .020 overbore, maybe a cam and intake manifold if I feel like I need to waste money

B: Rebuild Z6 for mild (5-8lbs) boost. Stock rebuild, ebay/cheap used turbo kit. probably tune with chrome or some equivalen t. I dont really know anything about boost, but I did get this car to learn so....

C: Buy another Z6 motor and drop it in as-is

D: B20 NA swap. Probably wouldnt rebuild it, just drop it into the car. I would try to pick up a B16 cable trans to go with it. Eventuall y I would want to V-tec head it.

I know that boost is probably the one thats going to make the car the fastest, but I really like NA...but I like fast....b ut I like my money to be in my wallet...

Help.

once i saw sohc i immediatl y thought boost...s ooooooooo oooooooo

DO IT!!!!!!!

you'd probably spend the sane amount, unless you have a hook up, on swapping everythin g to B series

get another motor to drop in while you build a turbo SOHC

I say A.5:
Z6 head gasket (nothing fancy)
ZC pistons
Rebuild the rest
Cam
Springs/Retainers
Good intake/exhaust

Speaking from experienc e, all minus the valvetrai n/cam and exhaust. Pulled great and I didnt even have Vtec hooked up.

I'm not a fan of investing money into a D unless you're building it from boost.

wasnt really a arguement, just an ephipaniz er.

i dont do it cause its fast, if i wanted fast id have sunk 12k$ into a cbr 1000rr and called it a day.

i do it cause i can, and love them. na, SC, turbo, whatever.

I love the sohc, and will probably never own another b series. I can build a $400 NA d that will walk all over a GSR swap.

a $2000 turbo D that will poop on a kswap. again this is my opinion. I know any of us can go any direction with our choice of engines. Just do what

you love.

This is why I don't keep a running total of my ef builds.

I am with my svo due to 1-9000 over 3 years.

My prelude I did.

My ef's I don't.  Plus I tend to do nickle and dime build's.  So I have to save.

So I think I'm going to take you guys' advice and just buy another z6 long block and keep my current Z6 to build on it later for boost. I think that will be the most cost effective and fastest way.

Once I get my taxes back I'll start the process.

Dare said the gaskets work wonders as long as you don't start the car.

What did I tell you about building the integra? Maybe I should just drop a D15b into the teg and GSR the civic. lol. Maybe not.
